With summer around the corner, the anticipation of swimming pools is near. The scent of tanning lotion, the sight of colorful floaties, and the echoes of cannonball contests evoke memories of fun-filled days for kids and families. Yet, there's a side to swimming pools that often goes unsung – their profound impact on our communities. Community centers increasingly incorporate pools, expanding access to aquatic activities in underserved areas. Dive into our blog to explore how these public pools are transforming neighborhoods and creating new opportunities for the communities they serve. https://ow.ly/HxhC50Rlgvc 📸: Garrison Stephens / Dr. Wesley Grant Southside Rec Center 📸: Mark Herboth / Watauga County Community Recreation Center

We're recognizing #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth by exploring the role of design in promoting well-being, particularly in spaces like schools. Did you know a student will spend approximately 15,000 hours in school from K-12? This underscores the importance of shaping safe, supportive environments for students to learn, grow, and collaborate effectively. We are committed to designing spaces that not only enhance learning but also support mental health. We prioritize this by integrating design principles that reflect nature, encourage physical activity, and foster a calm atmosphere, helping to cultivate environments where every student can succeed. Congratulations to our Route 168 Bypass Emergency Bridge Repair team on leading the effort for the City of Chesapeake to win the APWA Mid-Atlantic Disaster or Emergency Construction/Repair Award in the Less than $5 Million category. After a dredge barge impact caused critical damage to the Great Bridge Bypass Bridge over the Chesapeake and Albemarle Canal, our experts worked with the City to provide an immediate response to inspect and evaluate the extensive damage to the bridge superstructure. The team then brought together a local marine contractor, equipment suppliers, and a specialty contractor from the West Coast with experience in welded crack repair and heat-straightening of damaged steel structures to team with the City to repair and reopen this critical 70,000 vehicle-per-day artery. Clark Nexsen engineers worked closely with the contractors and the City to support this effort 24 hours a day – 7 days a week to restore traffic in just 13 days - weeks ahead of schedule and in time for Memorial Day traffic traveling to the Outer Banks. This award recognizes our commitment to efficient problem-solving that keeps vital infrastructure resilient and communities connected during emergencies. Bridge Engineers: Staci Dugan, Al Patel, Andy Heeze Roadway Engineers: Bill Wolfe, Wes Parker, P.E., PTOE Project Manager: Matt Agnes

This #NationalTransportationWeek, we're spotlighting a project that underscores the importance of resilient infrastructure connecting our communities. Take a look at this drone footage showcasing improvements underway along the Wilkinson Road corridor in Henrico County. The aging culvert system crossing Upham Brook's wetlands has been plagued by flood debris clogs and maintenance challenges. Our team is constructing a new bridge to replace the deficient culverts, increasing hydraulic capacity while reducing long-term costs. These enhancements will boost drainage, mobility, and access - better serving residents and preparing for future growth. As we celebrate transportation's vital role, projects like this ensure our roadways and bridges can reliably link people and opportunities. Stay tuned for more on strengthening this critical network! #DroneFootage #Transportation #RebuildingInfrastructure #RoadImprovements #BridgeConstruction #ConnectedCommunities #WilkinsonRoad

Our interns, architects, and designers conceptualized mobile-friendly, resource-maximizing comfort stations for Dorothea Dix Park through our firm's Combustion Chamber design competition. The winning "PODdy" seamlessly blended modern design with eco-friendly mobility. "Dorothea Rest Haven" and "CANOPY" also earned accolades for their out-of-the-box approaches. This is a primary example as to how tackling challenges fosters innovative design thinking 💡 🔗 See how their concepts transformed a utility into an architectural amenity with the full video here: https://bit.ly/4dARcdO
