A Legacy Built On: Safety | Stewardship | Passion | Collaboration

About us

More than 70 years ago, two brothers-in-law founded Clancy & Theys Construction Company in Raleigh, NC to capitalize on the post-WWII construction boom. Guided by fairness, integrity, and a powerful motivation to make others successful, the Company quickly grew and expanded from residential to commercial construction—forever shaping our legacy. While our industry is ever-changing, our family-centered values are unwavering. They are engrained in all we do and the foundation for the Clancy Way. Unlike other large construction firms, Clancy & Theys is a privately-owned, family-run company. We have recently entered into a new era of leadership with three members of the next generation of the Clancy family and several non-Clancy family employees continuing our legacy. In 2022, Baker Glasgow, a proven leader in our Company for more than 15 years, took over as President following David T. “Tim” Clancy’s retirement. Under our new leadership, we will continue developing and empowering talented teams to provide innovative solutions while delivering an exceptional Clancy & Theys experience. We do the right thing for our clients, colleagues, and communities with a legacy built on safety, stewardship, passion, and collaboration. In both our work and our relationships, we aim to always do the right thing, the right way…that’s the Clancy Way.

  • Becky Carter, the Vice President and CFO of Clancy & Theys, has been a dedicated member of the company for an impressive 45 years. Her commitment to Clancy & Theys stems from the exceptional opportunities for professional growth and the unique, supportive company culture that genuinely cares for its employees and their families. Becky describes this culture as the "The Clancy Way," a set of values and practices that prioritize the well-being and growth of its people while maintaining high standards of excellence in their work. Reflecting on her career, she expresses deep gratitude for Andy Oakley, her manager and mentor, who left an indelible impact on her professional development. Andy, widely respected within the company, guided Becky from her early days until his retirement, teaching her how to excel in her role. Another aspect that Becky cherishes about Clancy & Theys is the strong sense of teamwork and camaraderie. She fondly recalls the times when the team came together to tackle the significant challenge of changing accounting systems three times over the years. These experiences, though demanding, were made rewarding by the collective effort and the close-knit relationships among team members. This spirit of unity and collaboration is a hallmark of Clancy & Theys, making it more than just a workplace for Becky but a community where professional and personal bonds thrive.

  • As we celebrate all the moms, mother figures, and mom angels in our lives, we want to pass along some advice from our Clancy & Theys moms. These ladies work hard daily, keeping our project teams and divisions running smoothly. They are proud of their work, but we know the role they are most proud of is being called mom. So, in honor of Mother’s Day, we highlight some wonderful moms we call colleagues and friends.

  • Today, we reflect on a week filled with learning, growth, and a renewed commitment to valuing every voice. We believe safety is everyone's responsibility, and each of us plays a crucial role in creating a safe and secure environment. As Safety Week ends, we want to thank everyone for using their voice to advocate for safety excellence. This week, our Virginia Division honored this year's Safety Week theme, "Value Every Voice," at each of our job sites through a range of activities, from insightful toolbox talks and hands-on demonstrations to safety drills and, of course, some enjoyable gatherings. In keeping with the spirit of today’s theme, “Thank You for Using Your Voice,” we want to recognize and thank our Built on Safety Award winners from the Virginia Division. These awards are given to one employee and one project team each year during Safety Week who go above and beyond the standards to ensure safety is always a priority. The Virginia Division’s Built on Safety individual award goes to John Guzik. John, a carpenter who has been with our company for 10 years, constantly leads by example. He prioritizes the use of all personal protective equipment (PPE) and isn't afraid to speak up about safety concerns. He ensures tasks are executed with attention to detail and done right. His dedication truly sets a benchmark for safety excellence! The Virginia Division’s Built on Safety team award goes to The James at Springline project team. Located in Chesterfield, Virginia, the James at Springline is the first phase of a large, mixed-use development and includes a 298-unit apartment community with 28,000 SF of retail space. This team has gone above and beyond to keep our workplaces safe and secure. Congratulations to John and the James at Springline project team for these well-deserved honors. Thank you for using your voices to foster a culture of safety at Clancy & Theys. #BuiltOnSafety #75YearsOfSafety #TheClancyWay #ConstructionSafetyWeek

  • Clancy & Theys Construction Company has established itself as a prominent player in the realm of CM-at-Risk construction, a facet that has become integral to our business model. Over the years, we have garnered recognition for our proficiency in providing CM-at-Risk services across a diverse array of public sector projects, spanning from office spaces to lab buildings, campus housing and athletic facilities. Emphasizing the collaborative approach Clancy & Theys engages in early-stage involvement with owners and designers, offering preconstruction and VDC services, leveraging our expertise in cost modeling, and scheduling. In 2001, North Carolina SB 914, prompted a shift toward CM at Risk delivery methods, notably with the University of North Carolina (UNC) system. The UNC system recognized the suitability of CM-at-Risk for large ventures, leading to partnerships with Clancy & Theys. The company secured three of the first CM at Risk contracts for the North Carolina State University College of Engineering Phase II, North Carolina State University David Clark Laboratory, and the University of North Carolina-Wilmington Information Systems Office Management building. Despite the evolving landscape, Clancy & Theys continues to demonstrate adaptability, successfully navigating both CM-at-Risk and single-prime bidding formats to contribute to the development of esteemed educational institute. #ClancyTheys74 #BuildingLegacySince1949

  • Day 4 of Construction Safety Week’s theme is “Strengthen Our Culture”. Safety is a core value at Clancy & Theys and we believe in fostering an environment that protects quality of life and well-being. Here’s a recap of activities across the Wilmington Division: - Project Stand-Down: City of Wilmington MLK Community Center Addition – We took some time to talk with our masons on site about the importance of sharing their voice. Safety is a collaborative process, so we wanted to remind them that speaking up is just as important as listening. These are the people who do the actual physical work, and their perspective is invaluable! - Built on Safety Team Award – Congratulations to the entire Preston Ridge project team for winning the Wilmington Division’s Built on Safety Team Award! Their dedication to the safety of their workers and job site is not just something they speak to, it’s something they put into practice every day. Great job everyone! - Built on Safety Individual Award – For the second year in a row we are proud to present the Built on Safety Individual Award to Superintendent Michael Bays! Anyone who has worked with Michael knows that his devotion to not only the practical field aspects of safety, but also the documentation and recordkeeping aspects is evident in his day-to-day operation of any project he is a part of! Thank you for all you do Michael! - Project Stand-Down: Onslow County Emergency Operations Center Addition & Renovation – Michael Bays puts his award-winning safety efforts into practice. He held a stand-down to discuss the importance of communicating and actively listening to ensure safety is observed from top to bottom. Keep up the good work, Mike! #75YearsOfSafety #ConstructionSafetyWeek #BuiltOnSafety #ClancyTheys #ConstructionIndustry #WilmingtonNC

We spent Day 3 of Construction Safety Week in sunny Orlando, FL ☀️ At the Florida Polytechnic University Project, safety took center stage as Safewaze and Southerncarlson conducted a demonstration on fall protection and ladder training. The Florida divisions Safety Manager, Lee Maizel emphasized the critical importance of fall protection, underscoring its significance in preventing accidents and ensuring the well-being of workers. The commitment to safety paid off as the Florida Poly Team won their divisions Built On Safety Award, and BJ Nyhius won individual Build On Safety Award, reflecting their dedication to maintaining a secure work environment. Yesterday's focus on "embracing every voice" not only highlights a commitment to safety but also to inclusivity and collaboration in achieving project success. #75YearsOfSafety #ConstructionSafetyWeek #BuiltOnSafety #TheClancyWay

  • A quick recap of what your Clancy & Theys Charlotte Divison has been up to while celebrating and learning during National Construction Safety Week: - Strong teams build strong structures. Superintendent Billy Palmer used National Stand-down time to discuss Driving Personal Ownership with the J. Optimist Park team during National Construction Safety Week with a special demonstration from FallTech. - Indulging in some sweet and savory delights at The Quarter! Our teams are enjoying tajin fruit treats, a perfect blend of flavors to recharge and rejuvenate. Safety first, but a little treat never hurts! - Safety is not a choice; it's a priority. Today, we focused on fall protection education to ensure our teams are equipped with the knowledge and tools to always stay safe. A huge thank you to JSS Safety for bringing the high-rise safety talk directly to our on-site Radius team. - Safety is a practice. Our Solis Birkdale team is grateful for the expertise of Associated Scaffolding and Johnson Modern Electric in demonstrating essential safety protocols that keep our teams protected every day. - At Clancy & Theys, we believe in fostering a positive work environment. We enjoyed some friendly competition with our Built on Safety Awards - recognizing Derek Rowley from our Solis Loso team and bringing home the safety belt is our entire team at J. Optimist Park. - Technology and construction intersect when our teams get to try out virtual reality with the XRGuru technology that keeps them safe while experiencing potential job site hazards. Today, we celebrated National Construction Safety Week at our Charlotte Division projects with a focus on teamwork, education, and fun across all our projects. Here's a glimpse of the day's highlights as we continue to prioritize safety and excellence in everything we do. #75YearsOfSafety #ConstructionSafetyWeek #ClancyTheys #Highlights
