Fast Company's 2024 World Changing Ideas Awards were announced today, and Papillio Domas (Butterfly House): The Children's Hospice was named a finalist in the Architecture category. The awards highlight fresh sustainability initiatives, cutting-edge AI developments, ambitious pursuits of social equity, and other creative projects helping to mold the world. Papillio Domus is a groundbreaking children's hospice project offering hope and transformation to young patients with life-threatening conditions. It addresses the critical shortage of specialized care in the United States, bridging the gap between hospitals and homes with a warm, butterfly-inspired design that symbolizes hope and joy. The facility's focus on sustainability, utilizing mass timber and passive climate control, exemplifies innovation. Beyond its compassionate mission, this project emphasizes the pressing need for pediatric hospice facilities and healthcare professional training, impacting the well-being of children and underlining the importance of this issue for all. "I was struck this year by the global sweep of the honorees," says Fast Company editor-in-chief Brendan Vaughan. "It's endlessly inspiring to see how the world is coming together to devise inventive solutions to our most challenging problems. We need ideas from everywhere, and this year's World Changing Ideas Awards are an extraordinary encapsulation of the innovation and creativity that is so abundant around the globe." Congratulations to our healthcare practice on this remarkable achievement! #FCWorldChangingIdeas #fastcompany #architecture #awardwinningdesign #innovation #designinnovation #innovativedesign

Art has long been celebrated for its positive impact on healthcare settings. Traditionally, most research has focused on the benefits of art in acute healthcare facilities. However, the increased awareness of mental health issues following the COVID-19 pandemic calls for a deeper exploration of art’s role in behavioral and mental health environments. On today’s blog, Project Facilitator Andrea Guice, EDAC examines the differences between art in behavioral health settings and traditional medical environments. She provides practical guidance on common dos and don’ts, offering valuable insights into art application, installation, style, and subject matter in these specialized settings. Move over, Millennials. Gen Z is revolutionizing how brands connect with consumers—and designers are taking note. On the blog today, Shannyn Grandlienard explores how elements like signage, wayfinding systems, murals, digital displays, and architectural graphics shape our perception of the built environment and how we interact with it. In retail design, these elements are particularly important as they make the shopping experience immersive and engaging, enhancing the overall atmosphere and usefulness of the store. However, as consumer behavior evolves, environmental graphics must adapt as well. When the Atlantic Coast Conference announced its relocation to Charlotte, our design team eagerly seized the opportunity to breathe life into its new uptown headquarters. The result? A vibrant, boldly branded upfit that serves as a dynamic showcase of the ACC, its member institutions, broad-based sports sponsorship, values, and conference and national championships. From the initial experience of entering the space to the meticulous selection of each interior finish, every design decision was carefully crafted to reflect the ACC's storied past and extraordinary future. With amenities including a Game Day Operations Center, lively café, spacious boardroom, and Commissioner's office and executive suite, the space is fully outfitted with offices, meeting rooms, and production studios. Little's Brand Experience studio designed striking graphics and interactive displays, effectively showcasing the conference's rich history and brand. || Trademark Visual, Inc. | Rodgers Builders, Inc. | Susan Holt Architectural Photography #workplacedesign #workplace #officedesign #officeinteriors #acc #environmentalgraphics #egd

Landscape architects create sustainable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing spaces that enhance our quality of life and promote environmental stewardship. How? Let's take a look at BMW's training center in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The 67,000-square-foot center is more than a training facility; it is a creative learning environment that integrates technical skill development with innovative outdoor spaces. Little's land development team designed the property with purpose and sustainability top of mind. A hub for automotive excellence, the entire facility is accessible by vehicle—literally—with even an outdoor amphitheater and stage accessible by car. Other outdoor areas, including workspaces and a beer garden-style common area, allow students and employees to learn and gather amidst the tranquil beauty of nature, fostering creativity, collaboration, and well-being. Tying into the Carolina Fence™ initiative, a native plant pallet promotes environmental sustainability by fostering resilience, conserving resources, and supporting local ecosystems. The team also designed an inviting dry creek bed at the main entry, adding to the building's aesthetics and helping with stormwater management. We work toward designing projects that not only do less harm but ultimately do good—regenerative projects that successfully balance environmental, economic, and human factors. Our design process is guided by clear, measurable criteria that relate to health, energy, water, and social equity. To understand what these efforts might look like, let's consider the Center for Student Life, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation at Greensboro Day School. This two-story, 49,000 sq ft building, expected to break ground this summer, will be positioned in the center of campus, providing a new central hub and main entrance for the school. 🩺 HEALTH // A full-service health center supports the entire campus with full-time staff and exam rooms. 💡ENERGY // The building orientation maximizes northern light exposure and shading of existing mature trees. Daylighting analysis informed the location and sizing of shading devices to reduce glare. 💦 WATER // A water filtration system improves water quality, while water bottle fillers encourage healthy habits and reduce plastic waste. 👥 SOCIAL EQUITY // The building encourages convergence and collaboration of various academic levels, backgrounds, and experiences among students. Remember that every project is unique, and therefore, the measurable achievements for each project will differ. Every effort, big or small, can help us create a regenerative future—now that's something worth celebrating. #earthweek #sustainability #regeneration
