Creating and Protecting Ownership and Economic Opportunity
About us
Welcome to Self-Help! Follow us on Linkedin for regular updates about our research and policy development work and our fair lending practices and products for homes, businesses and nonprofits, green initiatives and community real estate development. Also, check out our SERVICES TAB to learn more about our integrated approach to community development. Want to learn more? Self-Help is a family of nonprofit organizations whose mission is to create and protect ownership and economic opportunity for all. Since Self-Help's founding in 1980, it has grown to include two credit unions, a loan fund, and a research and policy development group that supports those outside of the economic mainstream. Specifically, we: * Help borrowers build wealth by providing fair and responsible mortgages and small business loans in North Carolina, California and other parts of the nation. * Strengthen under-served communities by financing affordable housing, childcare centers, public charter schools, faith-based organizations, and community-focused commercial real estate projects. * Research and report on financial markets to support policies and industry practices that lower the cost of poverty and promote ownership.

To achieve our mission of economic opportunity for all, we are actively working to close the racial wealth gap. However, AANHPI communities are too often left out of conversations about economic inequality and financial empowerment. Let's ensure everyone is included in this critical dialogue. https://lnkd.in/eAUdSvPq #FinanceFriday #PersonalWealth #SmartMoney

See a penny, pick it up. All the day you'll have good luck. Pennies may not have much value these days but there are a few pennies that have made a mint for the owner: 1943-D: Lincoln bronze penny - sold for $1.7 million. 1943-S: Lincoln bronze penny - sold for $282,000. 1944-S: Lincoln steel penny - sold for $373,750. 1958: Lincoln penny - sold for $1,136,250. 1909 VDB: Lincoln penny sold - for $258,500. 1856: Flying Eagle penny sold - for $172,500. Good news! You can open a saving account at Self-Help with as little as $5. Now that's a penny saved. #LuckyPennyDay #GrowWealth

Pay yourself first means to designate a certain amount to go to savings before any other bills are paid. People have the most success when they have 10% of their paycheck directly deposited into a savings account. If you don’t see it, you won’t miss it. #SavingsSunday #GrowWealth #PayYourself

We believe in second chances. That's why we offer ways to help you boost your credit like our credit builder loan. How does it work? Borrow a small amount that is put into a special savings account. Make monthly payments and once you’ve paid the amount borrowed, we release the funds to you. It's that simple. https://lnkd.in/gDzcZbzh #GrowWealth #FinanceFriday #PersonalWealth #SmartMoney
